• Pope Francis will consecrate four bishops on October 4, 2019, at a Mass at 5 pm in St. Peter’s Basilica: three apostolic nuncios – two Italians and a Maltese – and the Czech Undersecretary of the Migration and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for the service of integral human development.

    They are:

    – Mgr. Michael Czerny, of the Company of Jesus, 73, from Brno, Czech Republic. Ordained a priest on June 9, 1973, he was appointed undersecretary – number 3 – of the section “migrants and refugees” of the Dicastery for the service of integral human development on December 14, 2016. He will be created cardinal on October 5, the next day of his episcopal consecration.

    – Italian Bishop Paolo Borgia, 53 years old. Ordained priest in 1999, graduated in canon law, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 2001. He worked in nunciatures in the Central African Republic, Mexico, Israel, Lebanon; and from the section for relations with the States of the Secretariat of State. Assessor for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State since 2016, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio on September 3, 2019.

    – Maltese Bishop Antoine Camilleri, 54 years old. He was ordained priest in 1991, studied law and canon law. He has worked since 1999 in Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Cuba. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio on September 3, 2019, after being Under-Secretary – Number 3 – for relations with the States of the Secretariat of State.

    – Italian Bishop Paolo Rudelli, 49 years old. Ordained priest in 1995, a graduate of canon law and moral theology, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 2001 where he worked in Ecuador and Poland. He has been a permanent observer of the Holy See at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg since 2014, before being appointed Apostolic Nuncio on 3 September 2019.
