The general public and all University students and medical professionals are encouraged to attend tonight Prof. Marc Desmet’s SJ lecture entitled: “In search of Meaning at End-of-Life Care: Experiences of a Belgian Jesuit Palliative Care Physician.” It will be held at the South Auditorium of Mater Dei Hospital (Medical School) at 18:00.
There will also be the possibility to ask questions and discuss cases with Prof. Desmet who would like to make this lecture as participative as possible.
About the speaker:
Marc Desmet (Roeselare, 1956) is a Dutch-speaking Belgian and has been a medical doctor since 1982. After two years of internal medicine, he joined the Jesuits in 1984. During this training period, he studied Philosophy at the Centre Sèvres in Paris and Theology at the Catholic University of Leuven. In 1988 he discovered palliative care during a medical internship in Northampton, United Kingdom, and later obtained a University Diploma in Palliative Care at the University of Lille (France). After his ordination in 1992, he worked for 27 years as a full-time palliative care physician at the public hospital of the city of Hasselt (1000 beds) where he founded one of the first Palliative Care Units and the Mobile Teams in Flanders. He is also chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Flemish Federation for Palliative Care.
