A collaboration between The New Victorians and The Archbishop’s Delegate for Culture has launched today in the form of a project that will see the sister duo accompanied by a multicultural choir perform in front of audiences in churches across Malta.
This project, which called The Christmas Chapel Hop, has become a tradition with The New Victorians having performed and produced two runs of their tour of concerts in different Chapels around Malta throughout the festive season over the past few years.
During the concerts, the duo and the choir will perform reimagined local hymns and carols whilst celebrating Malta’s heritage.
The multicultural choir has been assembled from the Filipino, Ukrainian and Nigerian communities in Malta. The group has been rehearsing together with Philippa and Bettina, their band, and other choir members from Malta in the Catholic Institute in Floriana.
The New Victorians expressed the gratitude and excitement about this year’s concert: “We’re excited to bring together a multicultural choir that reflects the diverse tapestry of modern Malta”.
The duo also said that this edition of the Chapel Hop “aims to transform the traditional church congregation into a more inclusive community in an attempt to revitalize these heritage sites with music and collaboration”.
This project falls right in line with the mission of the office of the Archbishop’s Delegate for Culture, Mons. Claude Portelli, who said that “this was a chance to create a new space for talent on our shores to find itself an audience”.
Over the past year, the Office of the Archbishop’s Delegate for Culture has focused on several initiatives to establish itself within the cultural scene as it embarks on the rethinking of the Catholic Institute as a main project for the Archdiocese of Malta.
Across churches in Santa Venera, Qrendi, Valletta and Żebbiegħ, the 20-strong ensemble will harmonise with The New Victorians and band in what promises to be a beautiful new version of the project.
Tickets are available on www.showshappening.com.
