  • The Pope’s trip to South Korea is “being considered”. This was confirmed to the press on the 23rd January 2014 by the director of the Vatican Newsroom, father Federico Lombardi, who said that Pope Francis received “an invitation” from the Korean bishops to coincide with the big Asian youth meeting due to take place in Korea in mid-August. As to the press rumours about the Pope’s trip to Sarajevo, the Vatican spokesman pointed out that “the Pope has actually been invited”, but “this is not a decision, and there is nothing going on”. As to Pope Francis’ third potential international destination, where he is supposed to visit Sri Lanka and the Philippines, father Lombardi answered that “there is an invitation, it is being considered”, but it has not been scheduled for 2014. So, the focus of Pope Francis’s “concern” is Asia, as the Pope had revealed himself as he travelled back from Rio de Janeiro, after last summer’s WYD: the goal is to continue evangelising what is considered to be the “future” of Christianity, in the Continent where his predecessor, Benedict XVI, could not go.
