On the occasion of Library Week, the Secretariat for Catholic Education is organising a week of activities focusing on culture and literacy to help nurture ‘Little Literates’. The activities are being held in Valletta, at the Museum of Fine Arts, The Studio Theatre at the Manoel Theatre and Auberge d’Italie. Grade 3 Church Schools students have been invited during this week.

The aim of the activity is to expose children to culture and literacy in an interactive way. Through these activities children will discover that reading and writing are essential in everyday life and successful acquisition of these skills can be achieved through fun activities.

Everyday three classes from different schools will be hosted by the Literacy Team. Each class will have a structured day and rotate from one venue to another to participate in all activities. Below are the activities that are going to be held at:

  • The Museum of Fine Arts:

1. Children will each be given a booklet which will lead them on a trail through the Museum.

2.   A memory game using pictures of paintings that are in the Museum itself.

  • The Studio Theatre at the Manoel Theatre

Children will have a first-hand experience of a real theatre and will take part in a reader’s theatre.  All children will participate in the play. They will be each be given a character, a prop to help them impersonate the character better and a line to read and act out. When put together this will turn out into a short play – the wolf’s jury (of the three little pigs).

  • Having lunch at Pjazza San Gorg and leaving a message hanging in the Pjazza …makes me happy
  • Auberge D’Italie

1. The children will participate in a story telling session about a shipwreck. Throughout the story, children will become active participants and will have a go at finishing off the story using their imagination.

2. In this activity the children will be put in groups of four and will follow a set of   instructions to build a galley.

This initiative is being organized by the Literacy Support Team, in conjunction with Let me Learn and Malta Writing Programme, within the Secretariat for Catholic Education and is supported by Fr. Charles Mallia, the Archbishop’s delegate for Catholic Education and Dr. Rose Anne Cuschieri, Director for Church Schools.
